IMovie is a part of Apple’s own suite of products for iOS (and macOS), and is a great video editor app for iPhone that you can try. While you may want to use a more powerful editing software on your Mac, iMovie is more than capable of handling video editing on the iPhone.

Content Philosophy Content which benefits the community (news, rumors, and discussions) is valued over content which benefits only the individual (technical questions, help buying/selling, rants, etc.). This fundamental difference in audience is why we support two communities,. If you'd like to view their content together, click. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc. I edit videos frequently in After Effects and Final Cut.

All videos are 1080p, 20-45 minute runtime, and average 5-10gb per video. RAM is important for editing, it's where the software stores the file while editing as well as being where the software itself runs from. The CPU is important for processing the final rendering/compiling. Another thing to keep in mind is that the older style 5400RPM hard drives will be MUCH slower than a modern solid state drive. I don't recall if the MBA ever used a spinning HD but I assume the older models did. If I were you, my must haves even for shorter videos would be 8gb RAM and a SSD. The i5 in the Air is clocked low for power consumption but with the TurboBoost it'll get the job done, albeit slower than a pro.
I loved my i5 MacBook Air, it was reliable and efficient. Unfortunately I can't tell you how i7 performs and I've never done any advanced video editing, but my i5 was good enough to play some new-ish games on medium settings. With that in mind, I'm sure i7 is even better. One thing I would suggest though is get 13' because it has 8GB of RAM, you won't be able to do any pro tasks on 4GB these days. If you do have a chance though, get MacBook Air.
The display is amazing and if you do pro video editing, you'll love that extra amount of space due to its high resolution. The only reason why I switched to rMBP and I don't regret it. The other option is to wait for the next Apple Keynote. Thy will certainly get rig of any non-retina options and make Retina a bit more affordable.
Feel free to comment or PM if you have any extra questions, happy to answer:). If you limit yourself to 1080p, yes. I have a 2011 MacBook Air and I've been able to use FCP X without much of a problem. I do tend to push it to the limits and the CPU fan runs hot sometimes, but I've been able to use it for 10min YouTube videos. Also, might want to switch FCP X to proxy clip mode to help with processing during the edit.
I've been able to play with anamorphic 4K footage on my system this way, but not a full project yet. All that being said, I'm upgrading to a retina 5K iMac as soon as he new models with enhanced graphics cards are announced (hopefully on the 27th).
